First of all, are all the Application Services up and running?
If so, then you can easily login without any problems and there is nothing wrong with the XP installation you did.

That's right but mostly as we will be working in the US based functionalities, we go by default or else just do the step you did -- skip the step of country-specific functionalities 2.
