Subject: Setting up a Forms/Reports System in Different Languages on MS Windows 2000
Doc ID: Note:242771.1 Type: BULLETIN
Last Revision Date: 16-OCT-2006 Status: PUBLISHED

PURPOSE
-------

This guide should give some hints which steps are required to switch a
MS Windows 2000 system to any available language. This provides a basis to run
Forms and Reports in the required local language environment.

Setting up a Forms/Reports System for any Language on a MS Windows 2000
------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is very easy to configure Forms/Reports to run in a specific language.
Oracle provides this feature in form of the NLS (National Language Supplement).
A couple of NLS parameters located in the environment (registry) define
language specific settings.
Typically -and that is the only required setting to switch between languages for
Forms/Reports- NLS_LANG is used with the value Language_Territory.Characterset,
for example

NLS_LANG=GERMAN_GERMANY.WE8ISO8859P15

There are more variables available for a more detailed NLS configuration.

The layout objects of the form/report must use a font which belongs to the
character set chosen in NLS_LANG
(highlight the object - Menu Format - Font - Font selection /Style).

The key for this configuration is that the operating system provides the basis
for this settings, especially font sets and a keyboard (driver) which respect
the character set chosen in NLS_LANG.

Prior to MS Windows 2000 (Windows9x, Windows NT3/4):
It is a must to have the operating system in the same language installed than
the NLS_LANG. So for example willing to run Forms/Reports in Czech means not
only to set NLS_LANG = CZECH_CZECH REPUBLIC.EE8ISO8859P2 but also having
installed a real Czech MS Windows NT4, MS Windows9x.

MS Windows 2000:

It is possible to configure the Locale and the Input Locale as a valid OS basis
for Forms/Reports' NLS settings. These steps need to be performed at

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Regional Options

1. General:
Choose the required language in Your Locale.
Choose language in Language Settings for the System (which will provide the font
sets).
Press Set Default.
Optionally the Advanced button offers the possibility to choose fonts for
specific character sets.
Note: If the fonts are not already installed on this system the MS Windows CD
will be asked for to get them installed.

2. Input Locale:
This setting configures the keyboard to run with a specific character set.
Choose Add and select a language as Input Locale and a Keyboard Layout related
to this language.
OK and Set as Default.

Closing the Regional Options dialog with Ok. The system needs to be rebooted
now. After it is up again there is a small icon in the task bar that shows the
current Input Locale. With this icon the Input Locale can be switched adhoc.

Comments:
- After changing the Locale it should not be expected that all OS related menus,
dialogs, etc. are now in this language, they will not. This depends on the
installation language of the OS.
- The Input Locale can be changed dynamically while typing. No rebooting is
required for a new Input Locale.
- Forms and Reports support a well defined list of character sets depending on
the Forms/Reports release (see Note 105809.1 Character Set Support for
Developer Tools).
The OS configuration must certainly correspond to this list.
- Besides this configuration tasks you must be aware of the fact that some
Reports output formats like RTF, ASCII, PDF, ... have some restrictions
dealing with fonts of specific character sets which are not Oracle Reports
related but depend on the output format's technology.
- The font selection for the layout objects is fundamental. All fonts can be
selected although they do not belong to the character set which should be
used. Typically question
marks ("?") and squares indicate that the font does not fit.

Example:

American MS Windows 2000, Forms/Reports 9i

Locale: German
Input Locale: German
NLS_LANG GERMAN_GERMANY.WE8MSWIN1252

Switching to Chinese

Locale: Chinese(PRC)
Input Locale: Chinese (simplified) QuanPin
NLS_LANG SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16CGB231280FIXED
Font @SimSun (CHINESE_GB2312)
