How to start my career in ERP's?

Post by admin »

Most of the people really struggle and don't know which area they should select to start their career in ERP's. Here we will try to discuss few points which may assist you in your career selection.

What are different types of areas?
Functional
This is more related to business knowledge and for this you don't need to know any tool like developer or toad. Functional will be mainly related to analysis to collect business requirements. For example if someone has operational knowledge of manufacturing, procurement, finance can easily discuss with business users to know their requirements and to design to be model for them. Since he knows the existing and future so he will be responsible to write documents like AS IS study, To be model, training tutorials, conducting UAT, any process improvement (BPR-Business Process Re-engineering). Now to provide mapping of existing to new process model in Oracle Application he/she should have the features knowledge of that area. Like for example if he/she don't know what are purchasing features in Oracle R12 then he/she will not be able to prepare any document or can discuss with the users/management.
Now next question can be who can work in this area and my answer is simple who understands the business and the way Oracle works in those modules can work as Functional now he can be a MBA, MCS, CA. It again depends on your knowledge and the level of information you have may be through your education or experience. A functional person title can be System Analyst, Business Analyst, Project Manager.
Technical
Technical is further divided into 3 areas like 1 - System Administrator, 2 - Developer, 3 - DBA.
A functional person can work as system administrator as this is related to managing application using front end forms using different responsibilities like System Administrator or modules related responsibilities like General Ledger Super User etc.
Developer is someone who is technical and knows how to use Oracle Reports developer, Oracle Forms developer, TOAD, Personalization, table structure, SQL etc. A developer if has business knowledge then it will be really a good advantage else Functional person can assist him with his requirements.
DBA is also called a Apps DBA is responsible on the database side includes installation, backups, recovery, performance, cloning, patching etc. So for DBA business process information is not mandatory but again having more information is always an edge.
Techno-Functional
This is mix of above two as few companies cannot afford two people as Functional and Technical specially when application is online and there is only support and not much development is required.

My personal recommendation is first you should know your own strength and weakness and only chose the area you are really comfortable. I have seen many people don't know about the accounts but they want to be Oracle financial consultant and after having Oracle financials training they think they are now Financial consultants. Yes it is true if you know accounting or you have Finance background else first learn accounting and then Oracle Application.
Another dilemma is people want to learn everything in one go which not a good idea. Better to start with the area you are good like if you are good developer then start as developer and gradually learn other things. It is better to be expert in one area rather than jack of all master of none.
The salary of each area can be different in different countries and companies. Just to give you an idea like in UAE,

Functional = 8,000 ~ 35,000 AED
Apps DBA = 8,000 ~ 20,000 AED
Developer = 6,000 ~ 18,000 AED
Techno-Functional = 10,000 ~ 35,000 AED

The above is just to give an idea and all depends on your hard work, experience & luck. If the above assisted you then kindly send us your feedback at info@erpstuff.com

Thanks
