how to restore production server backup in the event of hdd failure.
os : windows 2003 standard edition with service pack 1
backup : Full cold backup (D:\oracle folder will be backed up)
tool used for backup: veritas

I assume you are talking about Veritas Netbackp that's partner of Oracle Backup Solutions Program (BSP). If you already integrated your RMAN with it then you don't need to take cold backups (check Veritas documentation for how to integrate Oracle database with it). However if you are taking cold backup make sure your database is in shutdown state, you included all specified path mentioned in INIT file and controlfile.
