Questions about oraInventory

Post by lukman »

When we installed Oracle E-Business Suite 11.5.10.2 for the first time in a new machine, we always requested to run oraInstRoot.sh as root.

If we open that script, it gave information that it will created oratab, oraInst.loc and oraInventory in /etc.

My questions are :
1. Must all those files and directory created in /etc only or we can change it (either all or each one) to another location? Based on Metalink Doc ID : 418537.1 I assumed that we better put oraInst.loc and oratab in /etc to simplify maintenance (such as patching) but we can put oraInventory in another location e.g. in case of multiple E-Business Suite's installation we can put oraInventory in each E-Biz installation folder

2. I assumed that after installation succeed we may delete oraInstRoot.sh script because its function is only to create oratab, oraInst.loc and oraInventory, am I right?

3. If we want to install multiple E-Business Suite in that machine (assume that it's a single node), which is better : using only 1 oraInventory or edit oraInst.loc and add another location for oraInventory so that we have oraInventory for each E-Business Suite Installation? Please give me reason for your answer. CMIIW, right now, in case of multiple E-Biz installation in a single node, I can only think these:
* for single oraInventory
- benefit : easier to manage
- loss : if accidentally removed/deleted then it would add effort to restore it

* for multiple oraInventory
- benefit : deletion of an oraInventory would not affect another E-Business Suite installation
- loss : harder to manage

Thanks.
