Hi,
You define items in one organization. To distinguish it from others, we call it the Item Master organization. Other organizations (child organizations) refer to the Item Master for item definition. After you define an item in the Item Master, you can assign it to any number of other organizations.
There is no functional or technical difference between the Item Master organization and other organizations. However, for simplicity, Oracle recommends that you limit the Item Master to just an item definition organization.
Oracle also recommends that you do not define multiple item masters. This can make item definition and maintenance confusing. In addition, multiple item masters are distinct entities, with no relationship to each other. You cannot associate items in one item master organization with another item master organization. You cannot copy items across item master organizations.

The concept of defining master data is to define one and use multiple times. Now we will try to understand the concept of Master data (Supplier master, Items Master, Bank Master etc) with a simple example.
For example a company having different locations.
Islamabad - Company HQ - IM (Item Master) + IO (Inventory Organization)
Lahore - IO (Inventory Organization)
Karachi - IO (Inventory Organization)
it means company having HQ in Islambad having IM and IO (just specific to inventory). While Lahore and Karachi location have only IO. Why/benefits?
1- An item defined in IM will be used by all IO eliminating duplication and any confusion in item name and other attributes.
2- Reporting will be easy if same item will be used on all locations.
3- Centrally controlled.
4- Definition approval at HQ to create item.
5- Item Version control.
6- Easy for employees if transferred from one location to other.
.....
Here Item Master is called as parent and Inventory Organizations are called Child so to create child there must be first parent defined.
Let us know if still any confusion. Thanks

hi,
It is good and informative.I want to add something more in this
Same items can be having different items attributes accros the Organization. Example : item = X
--> X can be a purchased item in one location
--> X can be a finished goods in one organization
Both items can be defined as
-->Item Master -- > X items
Islamabad - Company HQ - IM (Item Master) + IO (Inventory Organization)
===
Child Items-->
Lahore - IO (Inventory Organization) --> Purchable
Karachi - IO (Inventory Organization)--> Finisgh Good / Sub- Assembly
===
Cheers
