Online vs. Offline integration

would someone clarify to me what is the difference between online and offline integration?

For example, the integration of GL with a non oracle system. what's the difference between online and offline integration??

basically the difference is that if the data prepared out site the oracle system and create a interface to populate this data into the oracle system with all the validation.For e.g. we create a AP or AR invoice data in the excel and transfer it into the oracle through interface (custom).. that is the integration between off line and online system..
