why ATO enabled?

Hi all,
While defining a Back-to-Back order item in Item Master, why do we check the attribute 'ATO Enabled' in OM tab? Does that imply that only ATO items can be back-to-back ordered?
Can we perform back-to-back order without checking 'ATO enabled'?
