What is Shared APPL_TOP and Unified APPL_TOP

Version R12/11i? = 11.5.10 and R12
Instance PROD/TEST/VIS? = PROD
Module? = HRMS
OS? = HP-UX

Can anyone please explain me the difference between
Shared APPL_TOP and Unified APPL_TOP
