Fast formula for salary update with increment prog

Dear All

I am running an increment progression point process to increase a salary/step of an employee in same grade. Oracle says that this process doesn't update salary of an employee and u need to create a formula for that.

My question is how can we create a fast formula to update employee salary with running progression point process. I know where we create the formula and the usage of formula result form. My question relates to, how oracle will guess the increment progression process is running and salary has to be updated and what would be the database items having all the progression points and its value.
