Extra or buffer segements

Post by Hanif »

I want to know how extra and buffer segments like futre 1 or 2 affects the server performance and data retrival process.

Does it take too long even if we have such segements but practically not using these.

First of all we need to understand why people add such segments and then we will discuss pro and cons of these segments. Then it will be easy for us to understand if there is any performance impact or not.

Why we need?
As structure of Oracle Apps is complicated and organization want to keep some room of adding extra options so it is better to add 1 or 2 extra (zero values) segments like in KFF so you can use in future for any extra segment without touching the structure.

Pros
You can add later segments but you will not be able to have your previous data so this was/is the reason to add such segments to keep future open.

Cons
It is an extra burden on data entry operator to type extra digits for each entry just for nothing. So we can say that it will really downgrade the performance of data entry operators and also inconvenience on reports to have so many zeros and if you will hide on reports (customized) then we will will use you will have to update reports as well.

Performance Impact
Let us assume you have Accounting Flexfield of 7 segments (actual) and 2 as extra and if there is any performance impact due to 9 then why Oracle is allowing to have more than this? Which means if more than 7 or 9 are allowed then there should be no issue. Well at the same time we can't compare 2 segments vs 7 or 9 segments as much data you fetch will take certain extra time but it should not be a performance issue at all. The only issue is of data entry where you have to enter dummy data just for nothing. Just think if these are not Future1 or 2 and both are actual then what about performance?

If there is any performance issue then better to ask your Apps DBA to fine tune the database instead of worrying about extra segments. We buy Oracle for these feature to have extra performance, security etc......

Note: All above notes are from my own experience and opinion and other can have different.

Earlier there was no solution to add or remove segments but now ERPstuff is providing such solution as well without reimplementation. As reimplementation means start from zero and without historical data. Here is our solution detail and let us know if any detail is required,
