UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY?

Hi,
On linux machine due to imporper shutdown you may get the following error on Linux machine,
UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY
and the system will not boot but will prompt to run fsck. So on this prompt ener root password and you will be in maintenance mode. Then on prompt enter fsck command,
# fsck -y /
