In discrete manufacturing the manufacturing floor works off shop orders to build something. The individual products are easily identifiable. Discrete manufacturing is often characterized by individual or separate unit production.

In process manufacturing, you can't tell the difference between one product and another (like gallons of gas). Manufacturing where a chemical change has taken place.

Discrete Manufacturing - Manufacturing environment in which you can disassemble/break the final product to get back the raw material. No change in material composition

Process Manufacturing - Manufacturing environment in which chemical/product composition of final product is different from raw material user. U cannot get back the raw material

Generally discrete mafg is used for low volume high cost items , So for e.g. building a engine will be a discrete mfg.

Process is for high volume based systems like manufacturing 200,000 soaps a day.

The way you account your costs will change based on the manufacturing methodoligies your company chooses. Oracle applications has hence provided seperate implementation options for DM and PM.
