Help regarding Key flexfield segments

Hi,
During a New Org Set up we enter values for Key Flexfield segments
We enter the application name and corresponding Title and then navigate to segments and enter values,

What si the use of this
Can anyone tell me the concept of Key Flexfields

These type of concepts you can easily find in oracle documentation, i am copying the matter anyways:

Key Flexfield is an intelligent key that uniquely identifies an application entity. Each key flexfield segment has a name you assign, and a set of valid values you specify. Each value has a meaning you also specify. You use this Oracle Applications feature to build custom fields used for entering and displaying information relating to your business.
