PlaceHolder is used in Reports just to retain some value. If any value need no calculations then can be placed in holder at report level.

For Example i have a Inventry report i run it day by day some day reports print on 2 pages some days it print on 3 pages and some time it print only on 1 page and i mention hardcoded page number in the foter of a report then i learn in book that if i use Place Holder for page number then it is not necessary to print page number on a report of 1 page but is disable for 2 pages report or etc etc.
