Balancing Segment

Can any one explain what is the use of balancing segment, and why it is called balancing segment.

The system ensures that journal entries are balanced--debits equal credits--for each value of the balancing segment. You should make the company segment the balancing segment, so that journal entries always balance by company.</span id='hl'>
