Can this name convention in PO & INV save dollars?

An article at one of my favorite web references (http://bit.ly/PO2INVitemNames) on ERP gives an example of how can changing a naming convention of items in <b>Purchasse orders and Item master</b> saved the client huge money as they could reduce the inventory. Need to check with the group, if this naming convention will work in all scenarios and will it impact any other design consideration in Oracle?
